The Nonpareil Hotel Circa 1900
Once the lunch counter at Henry's Drugstore where Elvis Presley used to frequent, it now serves as a full service bar for Southbound Tavern.
233 CHERRY—BUILT CA. 1895 AS THE 2-STORY NONAPRIEL HOTEL WHICH BURNED DOWN ON CHRISTMAS EVE 1901. BY THE 1920S, THE BUILDING HAD BEEN REBUILT AND HOUSED THREE STOREFRONTS. FROM ITS CONSTRUCTION UNTIL THE EARLY 1920S, THE LEFT PORTION WAS A GROCERY STORE. THEN IT HOUSED THE OFFICE OF A. V. MCCARTY (LOANS/INSTALLMENTS) AND THE QUEEN CANDY KITCHEN. THE CORNER PORTION OF THE BUILDING (ON RIGHT) HAS BEEN A DRUG STORE FOR MOST OF ITS EXISTENCE. IN THE 1920'S IT WAS MILES PHARMACY, AND BY THE 1950'S, IT WAS HENRY’S DRUG STORE, WHERE FAMED SINGER ELVIS PRESLEY USED TO VISIT THE LUNCH COUNTER WHILE WAITING TO GO ON AIR ACROSS THE STREET AT THE LOCAL RADIO STATION. THERE WAS ALSO A HENRY’S LIQUOR STORE IN THE BUILDING. THE BUILDING WAS DAMAGED BY FIRE IN THE 1950'S AND WAS SHORTENED TO 1-STORY (AND THE FRONT WAS REBRICKED).
HENRY'S WAS THE EPICENTER OF THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT AND INTEGRATION IN PHILLIPS COUNTY. IN THE EARLY 1960'S, THE STUDENT NONVIOLENT COORDINATING COMMITTEE (SNCC) BEGAN WORKING TO INTEGRATE PUBLIC PLACES IN HELENA, INCLUDING HENRY’S DRUG STORE AND HABIB’S CAFETERIA. IN NOVEMBER 1963, THIRTY DEMONSTRATORS WERE ARRESTED AFTER ENTERING THESE ESTABLISHMENTS IN PROTEST, AND THEIR LEADERS WERE CHARGED WITH “INCITING TO RIOT.” THE CIVIL RIGHTS ACT OF 1964 ENDORSED THE VALIDITY OF THEIR EFFORTS TO INTEGRATE HELENA BUSINESSES.
Today it is the home of Southbound Tavern. Owners Joel and Amber Tipton, in an attempt to help revitalize Cherry Street, decided to open "The Tavern" in September 2017. Moving from Dallas, TX to the Delta in September 2015 to become the owners of the famed Edwardian Inn, Southbound Tavern is their 2nd community investment since moving to the area.
Southbound Tavern is a breath of fresh air... Specializing in steaks, seafood, burgers, wings, craft beer, and more. Life has quickly rebounded in the area around the Tavern. Partly because of the great atmosphere and food, but also because of the live music venue they have established on weekends.
